Solid Steel Radio Show

DK, Gilles Peterson

It's two bumper mixes this week as we gear up for the Bonobo all day festival at the Roundhouse on Saturday 18th May. Our guest in Hour 2, Gilles Peterson will be DJing at the event and Solid Steel will be broadcasting live all day with Coldcut, DJ Food and DK on Roundhouse Radio from 2pm (UK Time) - Roundhouse Radio

DK opens this week with a track off the awesome Thundercat album and into Ten Tigers from Bonobo, the return of Slum Village and back to '95 for T Power & MK Ultra. Then it's another spin for the Machinedrum mix of Clissold, Leatherette (who are also playing at the Roundhouse), Joy Orbison and Owiny Sigoma Band. African and Latin rhythms take over with Irakere, Roberto Roena, Four Tet remixing Rocket Number Nine and Azymuth ahead of their UK tour next month. The beats turn heavy with Spatial, Dorian Concept, Walter Ego and two from Die & Addison Groove, before BRTSH KNIGHTS and Ronnie McNeir add a soulful slant. And with the Fela Kuti tribute show also happening this weekend in London, we feature a 1975 cover version from Johnny Rodrigues and a track from the legend himself, off the suitably titled 'Fela's London Scene' album recorded at Abbey Road.

For the second hour we welcome Gilles Peterson in the slot for the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel, a DJ who (along with Coldcut) also presented a show in the 90's on Kiss FM. For this mix he's layed down a 'Brit Funk 1977 - 1982' mix, returning to a period of music that was an important part of his life growing up. Music from independent labels, some run by record shops, like the first track by Cache on Groove Records. This is followed by the classic 'Trip to your mind' by Hudson People, a record that a 15 year old Gilles Peterson caught from them in the crowd at a Purley all-dayer. Then it's more music from the likes of Freez, Atmosfear, Hi Tension, TW Funkmasters and Sun Palace, but to hear more about this mix from the man himself, check out this video he made for us - Gilles Peterson Brit Funk Mix video

Mr Armtone - Time Machine

Mr Armtone returns with his latest AV mix titled 'Time Machine' which expertly travels through quality selection of visuals and audio. As usual with Solid Steel video mixes, it's not just a collection of music videos, it's also about selecting exciting visuals to match the audio and edit into a well crafted video mixtape. We open with hip hop and beats from The Chemical Brothers, Haiku D'Etat, Jay Z and Tipper, moving on to our own Coldcut and The Herbaliser and up into TC and Cyantific. Then it's a brief old skool trip with Sir Mix-A-Lot and back again with Dizzie Rascal, Benga, Silkie and an appearance from Wiley. We close with Hexstatic, the excellent Breakage remix for Roots Manuva and a sublime ending with 'Time Machine' by Chocolate Milk.

Cymatic Frequencies II by DK - Part 1

DK returns with 'Cymatic Frequencies II' and as before it's another AV mix. This is Part 1 of 'Best of 2011', taking personal favourites from his mixes this year and adding suitable and sometimes breathtaking visuals to compliment the audio. This Video Mixtape includes a few of the artists Original video's but in most cases visuals have been sourced from animation, CGI, Short Films, archive footage and edited to each track in the mix. Some of the 2011 musical highlights include Africa Hitech, Machinedrum, Peverelist, Skream, Pearson Sound, Thundercat, Michael Kiwanuka and the Stepkids, plus there's a few dips into the archive with Wayne Smith, Tribe of Issachar, Herbie Hancock, Burial and Vangelis.

Cymatic Frequencies II by DK - Part 2

We continue with the second part of Cymatic Frequencies II by DK, the Video Mixtape reviewing some of his favourite mixes from 2011 with added visuals. Using more Original Videos from the artist this time and the quality of the music is equally as good as Part 1. It's a sombre start with Gil Scott-Heron RIP, followed by James Blake and hip hop from Paul White, Danny Brown and Shabazz Palaces. Ninja Tune feature with Mr Scruff, Toddla T, Raffertie and Fink, with Big Dada represented by Wiley & Offshore. There's 2 from Martyn on Brainfeeder, Zed Bias features 3 times and it's big club tracks from Joe Goddard, Julio Bashmore and Fourtet. Plus there's a few classics from Liquid Liquid, Radiohead and Har You Percussion group to close a visual feast.
